For the Ukrainian organizers of this project Cannes and Avignon in France, Venice Biennale in Italy were the model. Festival is called to be an event presenting contemporary art to people, and helping people see that they do not live in any town in the periphery of either Russia, or Europe, but incultural capital of the distinctive country. It seems that this grand celebration named Gogolfest, that every year is surprising not very spoiled by such art-marathons Ukrainians, soon will surprise inhabitants of Perm.
Gogolfest comes to Perm thanks to famous music producer Alexander Cheparuhin who in 2009 had already surprised townspeople by rich musical program - supertale Deti vydry, Tuvian group Hun Hur Tu's shows and American DJ Carmen Rizzo, and the festival of the past and current members of group King Krimson. According to the Alexander's words, thanking to Ukrainian Festival Perm will see a completely new panorama of Ukrainians and even Slavs.
Gogolfest in Perm is an guest festival outside of Ukraine. Besides the groups theirselves Perm will hear also absolutely unique combinations - joint performance of Vopli Vidopljasova with a Permian chorus, and зerformance of three participants - Inna Zhelannaia, Katya Chilly and ethno-chaos band DakhaBrakha. All in all 100 participants will take part in the fesival.
Participants:
The first day of the festival will be opened by Inna Zhelannaia, Katya Chilly, and ethno-chaos band DakhaBrakha.
Inna Zhelannaya is the founder of the group Farlanders (1994-2004), one of few Russian singers, known far beyond Russia, which wоn by her music hundreds of thousands of people at the most prestigious festivals of ethnic, jazz, pop and rock music in Germany, UK, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Slovenia, Poland, Singapore, Scotland, USA and other countries.
In February 2007 Zhelannaia started to work in a new music project. As always, the best music artists are concentrated round her. She still works with folk material from different regions of Russia, but even the professionals don't undertake to identify the stylistic direction of this music. It is the stunning mix of electronic, progressive, psychedelic music, trance, and jazz.
Katia Chilly. In her musical career Katia had to collect a number of prestigious nominations at home and abroad: participated the gala concert Best Of The Fringe (with a live broadcast on Sky Channel), radio and TV programs BBC, Channel four (live broadcast also). As a result she was included in the prestigious final TV-BBC-1 digest Edinburgh Nights (with Orbital, Nick Cave and Dirty Tree, John Zorn and Masada). Kate won all Ukrainian competitions she have taken part in (Festival Chervona Ruta 97", etc.) and won the nomination Best female singer of Ukraine by Ukrainian Rock Academy. Looking thiny, like a teenage girl, with sword voice that divide the space and awakens blood, Katia will present acoustic project (vocal, piano, bass, violin, jambo, darbuka).
Today Vopli Vidopljasova is the world's most popular Ukrainian rock group, which gives 200 performances a year. They will perform with the Perm chorus on the first day. Immediately after them - Oleg Skrypka's Ukrainian ethno-disco featuring ensemble Choboty z Bugaia. This part of program includes Ukrainian folk dances, fashion show of Ukrainian ethnic collection, Ukrainian national dishes sampling (vareniks, vodka, etc.)
On the second day of the festival CCA Dakh acts wth its performance King Lear in the theater Scena-Molot. This two-hour action recalls elements of two traditions - the Japanese Mask theater and Eastern temple arts. lear's hopelessness and despair, his inhuman impulses, his foll's sad dance, internecine battle for power, and story about eternal wisdom of Earth.
Gogolfest goes on with tonic combination of reggae, jazz, hip-hop, rock-and-roll, and soul music performed by the band Boombox, that magically affects audience in some unfathomable way, brining to listen their song again and again, rewrite tracks to friends.
The festival program will be continued by Perkalaba - a group from Western Ukraine, playing Gutsul ethno-ska music. The title Perkalaba is a name of a small village in Gutsul Carpathians, which symbolizes for the musicians their individual Zion. Perkalaba traveled throughout Ukraine, performing in all possible clubs. Till 2003, after concerts in Poland, as well as numerous festivals in Ukraine and neighboring countries, group is focused on their own invented style named gutzul roots. During the concert at the Rock Existenzia Festival finally become clear that such a dynamic and energetic group with such a mutual sympathy to the public is a real discovery, and multinational audience adored group.
Second day of the festival goes on at the Museum on the River with a total dance party.
Third day will be opened with one of Europe's loudest theatrical show performed by the ethno-chaos band DakhaBrakha and CCA Dakh, entitled Dreams of abandoned roads. A fine minimalism which Igor Stravinsky was dreaming about in Svadebka and Tsar Edip has been dubbed in Ukrainian folklore mixed with world-music, and the senses, form of representation, accents, climaxes and breakdowns have been measured to such an extent that it’s impossible to tear away your eyes and ears from this mystery.
The third day of the festival will be concluded by the group Hajdamaky in the great hall of the Theatre Theatre. This team got the apt name in the new millennium, when at first time in Ukraine signed a contract with one of the world's four major record labels EMI, in which has already released four solo albums. Each concert of Hajdamaky is a huge show in Cossack Rock style. It is brilliant presentation of the heroic heritage of the nation. It is elegant synthesis of treasures of Ukrainian and Balkan music, rock, dub, punk and ska, the energy of lurics and the explosive power of each instrument in hands of seven high-level musicians. Published in Poland joint album of Hajdamaky featuring great Polish intellectual music group Voo Voo was sold for two weeks and became golden.
